Practise Filming Conversation - Editing And Filming

After gathering all the relevant research we wanted to start carrying out the actual process of practising of producing film and editing.
As part of a perlimary task( a development practise piece of filming) we decided to do a short piece of a conversation and following tracking shots. The footage included exchange of some dialogue with some basic camera angles to practise the skill of filming and editing. In order to gain a idea of the different types of filming we also did a short run up piece of a character walking into the room. This allowed us to practise different angles.

The types of shots included where:

- First shot is a long shot pan that is on a slight low angle.
- Followed by a high angled medium shot.
- Then a medium shot pan.
- After is low angle medium shot with slight movement to the left.
- Then a medium shot, which follows the character sitting down.
- A medium shot/ side view.
- Close up of characters,This shot is used to show more emotion than a standard shot would do.

This experience allowed us to both film and give us a chance to edit.We originally started editing with the simple Windows Movie Maker software but due to this software's limitations we choose to start editing with premiere pro as this program has much more functions. It was good that we got a chance to use this software early on as it was new to use both.

This was edited in a DV - pal standard 48khz format which is a 4:3 Ratio on TV specs

Documentary Reseach/Existing Documentary

Doing reseach into existing documentarys is very important to me as it can give me an insight to the types of techniques used to achieve sucessful products.I have chosen to look at relvent documentarys closey linked to the types that i like and see must protental to deveopl from.I want to see how they create feeling and repeseention. There are five examples that i have looked at.the examples given are included for various reasons. The reasons are exsplained under neath the video clip.

My main goal from this section of reseach is to be able to take factors included in these types of documentary and deveopl them to my piece. The idea is that if i use the correct skills in my piece then it will match its target market and be sucessful.

Horrific Documentary on Russian Neo Nazis

Above this text is one of the most relevant pieces of research we have gathered. The reason this clip from a documentary produced by 'Current TV'. which explores the trouble in Neo Nazis in Russia.the style and presentation of this clip is relevant to use as we really like the structure and see the way they use a combination of both one to one camera interviews and action shots of the issues as being a good way to present the issues of which you are trying to convey to the audience.

A Small insight into the attitudes and ideology of this Nazis group. The small snippet which includes the title of the program with a soundtrack, also included a display of 2 clips that present the documentaries in a horrific way.The ways this clip is presented adds strength to the issues being conveyed.

The clip begins with a man involved with the supporting of this group, The way the first clip of a man talking to the camera gives the audience A sense that it Looks like a guy selected from the public to explain the situation, he talks and presents the culture and society.

Also one of the clever factors involved in this clip is the soundtracks which creates a perfect atmosphere to portray the emotion to the audience in a direct light to put across the issue.

Tourettes I Swear I Can't Help It

This clip has been included as i personally watched this program at the time that it was on TV and when considering relevant research sources i immediately thought of this clip as it fits the types of representation and codes and conventions suitable for are production.

This is a program based on a disability known commonly as ' Tourettes' its correct original name being ' Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome'.The program tackles the terrible trouble that the patients have to live with. The way the program is constructs shows the way the disability effects two main individuals. As a audience we witness the issues through there eyes instead of looking at it from a presenters point of view.

The reasons why it is relevant to are studies as it shows the ways a disability can be present. The techniques of how we see the life of a individual can work because it allows you to construct and build a atmosphere for the one certain issue.

The editing and soundtracks used are very successful and would be relevant for are documentary as they build a distress and upsetting feeling for the viewer.

Factors that we would like to take from this example of documentary ?

- Types of Storyline.
- editing and sound
- voice overs

Why Are Thin People Not Fat

Dispatches - The Truth About Your Food

This clip is from a program called 'Dispatches The Truth About Food'.This is a great example of a documentary that follows the typical codes and conventions of a documentary, using simple camera angle and shot. The way the camera focus on the subject matter is by mainly consistently focusing in close ups moods using pans at eye level view.

As you see with lots of documentaries to heighten the expectations of the viewer, the program is edited to begin with.A clever factor that introductions the program including small clips from the program. There is usually accompanied with a soft middle class voice over that produces the impact of whats going on ,The idea is to give a short brief summary on what the program is about.

In this program/episode the theme is aimed to investigate Britons issues surrounding food and the intake by people. There are different aspects involved in this program, one of which is a interview with a family and the goal is to prove and make the family aware of issues surrounding food.

I think the style of this type of documentary follows a much different style to other which we have looked at but equally the techniques and styles shown are of interest to us as they can present different ways of looking at various issues.

Dispatches takes a harsh line in showing to us as the audience, facts and figures in a direct in your face manner. The ways they do this is by including the public, they ask individuals randomly to see how much then know regarding the subject.

Factors that we want to take from this example ?

- The way facts and opinions are presented.
- Including the general public to enhance the documentary theme.
- Editing and sound.
- The way it tackles the same issue but using different styles, E.g. different case studies instead of one example.

Wife Swap UK

I have included this ' Wife swap ' episode produced by channel 4 as it is a very well know TV series that is in a documentary style but also has a entertaining reality TV style which makes it a very interesting example to look at.

The basis idea behind Wife Swap is two wife's swap for a given amount of time. The objective is to show the two wife's in a different household environments.

Each program starts with the same style narrative. They use a voice over explaining the families and the members involved. The voice over is carried out by a male, with a simple monologue. Although the content of theses programs is generally of lower class individuals. This type of viewing experience is very successful with educated working class audience.

The types of Camera shot and angles used are normally set up capturing the actions although the shots are simplistic. They include a range of shots including long shots, medium shots, shots that show the character in there home environment, which is a aspect of mis en scene.

The objective of theses programs is to show the families there bad ways and as a conclusion they have one final talk together to come to a successful result. In the certain program the conclusion is a successful result.

The reasons this is a relevant documentary to are studies is that there is deliberate conventions that present certain atmosphere. The ideas behind this production is to produce entertainment elements and the enthuses is not on presenting facts but to solve issues. The main goal for this style of program is to create drama between each family in stereotypes ways.

What factors we want to take from this example ?

- Entertainment values
- Editing and sound
- The way the program has a fast start to grab the audiences attention.
